Work Experience with She Maps
Are you a young person who is interested in STEM and drones lessons but feel like those opportunities are out of reach, especially as a girl?
Well, at She Maps that is not the case. They overcome the barriers to youth employment opportunities and offer work experience for high school students to learn more about STEM, drones, and what it would be like to work in that field.
Work experience is a weeklong experience which exposes younger people to workplaces, helping them get an insight on what industries they are interested or disinterested in firsthand. You get on-the-job-skills and a chance to develop your skills.
How YOU can be Involved in Drones in Schools?
Many schools have STEM-related programs, but they are only offered to senior students in grades 11 and 12. So, younger students are left out. Good thing She Maps has offered work experience to students in grade 9 and 10.
By exposing younger people to this unique drone STEM curriculum and work experience, She Maps has helped students like myself to reflect on what they would like to do in future. If you take interest and enjoy subjects like I.T and Robotics, then you should reach out the next time She Maps offers work experience. At She Maps, you can learn more in depth about the environment, technology, drones and how younger generations can preserve the earth which are more relevant compared to typical jobs.
According to the World Economic Forum, automation will displace 75 million jobs and generate 133 million new jobs worldwide by 2022. By 2025, AI related job creation will reach two million.
She Maps offers a drone curriculum that includes:
- Data processing
- Stitching orthomosaic imaging
- Flying mini/Mavic drones
- Learning how drones and technology can protect at risk ecosystems
- Working a diverse environment
- Bonding work relations through understanding each other’s personality types (usual work experience wouldn’t do that)

How She Maps is Different from Standard Work Experiences
The most common industries students apply to are fast food/restaurants, allied health, tourism, engineering/architecture, fashion/design, digital media, and education etc. This restricts the variety of options that students can choose, as typical work experience only focuses on one industry out of many.
However, at She Maps Work Experience the knowledge gained covers a broad range of industries such as the following:
- Disaster relief
- Emergency services
- Hair and beauty

However, these industries can find a new way to utilise drones and not just in the US but around the world with the idea of GeoNadir.
The Idea of GeoNadir and What it Means for You
The company She Maps not only focuses on changing society with encouraging young students to be involved but helping the environment globally with the vision of GeoNadir.
The basic idea is for drone-flyers around the world is to capture images of their environment, and then for free, upload those images to She Maps. That is where the magic begins.
The next step is “data processing” which this case the “data” is the images then they “process” them to find the coordinates of each photo and then stitch them together to create a basic map. This map has better detail and resolution than a commercial satellite image.
With the final product, industries around the world can observe more closely patterns in the environment and figure out how to solve the issues presented in those patterns. This could change the world we live in for the better and you can be a part of it. If you own recreational or educational drones, you can be part of this program and contribute to the well being of the environment and in turn the world you will grow up in.

My name is Megan and I’m a 14 year old year 9 student. I am interested and experienced in the field of technology and drones, being a certified drone pilot. I studied drones for around 18 months, both theoretically and practically, to obtain my Remote Pilot Licence for flying drones both recreationally and commercially. I was one of 6 students chosen to participate in the She Maps work experience week to learn more about drones and how to use them to benefit the environment. I myself have enjoyed the work experience and encourage other students to take part in it.
My name is Miran, I am 15 years old and I am a student in grade 10. I especially enjoy spending time in nature by diving, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, camping and climbing trees. This has influenced me to care more about the environment, which is one of the reasons why I decided to have some drone education through She Maps’s work experience program. This was the perfect opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of people, technology, drones, and artificial intelligence. I met new people and created strong work relationships through entertaining and educational activities.
