STATEMENT: We are here, we haven’t been sold!

She Maps co-founders Paul Mead and Dr Karen Joyce

An update for our community

We have recently received comments, asking if we have “sold the business”, or restarted under “She Flies”?!

We want to confirm and clarify that the She Flies companies started by Dr. Karen Joyce and Paul Mead, with a former business partner, closed in late 2018. It was a mutual agreement between us as business partners that we would pursue new opportunities, separately.

The trademark of ‘She Flies’ was retained by our former business partner and this trademark was recently sold to a third party by our former business partner.

Since September 2018, Karen and Paul have been operating She Maps, teaching our popular Drone Day Teaser, camp program and Instructor training. As the creators of these programs while operating the She Flies companies, Karen and Paul retained full IP and confidential information rights and have taught these programs under She Maps for over 12 months.

After the closure of the She Flies companies, we felt there was still more work to do to challenge the unconscious bias in the STEM workforce, and so we continued our personal mission to increase diversity in STEM. Since the closure of the She Flies companies in late 2018, we have exposed over 1,600 students and teachers in 72 programs, through She Maps.

We have also expanded our programs, partnering with WeRobotics to now have trained instructors in 11 countries, provided all Queensland Teachers with online resources for free thanks to a partnership with The Surveyors’ Trust, delivered our programs in the UK and are currently running a World first online drone conference for educators – EduDrone, bringing together people from around the world.

The programs designed by Karen and Paul have now been taught to over 5,000 students and teachers since they first began in 2017. We are proud to be an Australian business, scaling our efforts internationally to increase the number of girls and women to be confident in choosing a STEM career.

To be clear, a third party has purchased the ‘She Flies’ trademark/s only, from our former business partner.

We continue to own all confidential customer information and IP related to all the programs designed, developed and taught by Karen, Paul, and our amazing Instructor team.

Our mission continues

and we will continue to inspire future STEMinists through the magic of drones and geospatial science.

Thanks, Karen and Paul
