Step 1

Teachers complete the professional learning

Sign up for an individualised virtual professional learning program and gain confidence in bringing microdrones into your classroom.
We will cover equipment setup, classroom management, curriculum connection, skill development, and troubleshooting.

Classroom Drone Essentials

This is the foundation program for getting started with drones and is best suited for students in years 5-10.

We will show you how to take your students on a journey of being geospatial scientists for the day. We have resources to expose your students to great role models, challenge unconscious bias, explore applications of drone technology, understand safety and drone regulations, as well as learning how to fly and code educational drones.

You are entitled to 2 x 45 minute sessions.

You will be given access to our She Maps Membership, providing you with all the resources you need to continue the microdrones experience in your classroom.

Step 2

Students take part in the Drone Fair

We will introduce your students to manual and coded flight in real world scenarios. We will assess assess them against our Junior Drone Pilots Licence checklist, as well as demonstrate to teachers how to manage a class with drones.

The Drone Fair is held at one of our host venues, where we endevour to introduce the students to industry professionals or researchers who are using drones in their work.

This excursion is also designed to give you more ideas about how to effectively run a microdrone program in your school, as you will be given the opportunity to meet one of our Certified Instructors on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes you do. In your grant agreement, you would have applied for the purchase of drones and other equipment. When you schedule your online PL, Katie will confirm with you what equipment you have.
  • You can do the Drone Fair before you have completed your Professional Learning. Our Education team will ensure you are supported and an individual plan developed for you.

  • You can start before your Drone Fair. Our Orbit membership provides you with all the information you need to run your in school drone program. We recommend you have your two PL sessions before flying. If you choose to start after your event that is perfectly acceptable.
  • You can run either an in class program – particularly suited to a year and subject.  The other option is to organise a drone club for the students that participated in the Drone Fair. We recommend that you start with the same program that was demonstrated at the Drone Fair – Classroom Drone Essentials.
  • No you don’t. She Maps provides all the drones, tablets and safety equipment to run a face-to-face program.
  • No, you do not need to be a certified drone pilot to run microdrone lessons in your school or drone club. We can provide you with guidance on the regulations and what you might need to comply with, or the right questions to ask.
  • She Maps has consulted CASA on this and have done the hard work for you.  In order to fly indoors we recommend clear flight lanes, safety areas to fly behind (like lines on the ground – doesn’t need to be drone cages), safety glasses and safety briefings at the start of the activity.
  • If you need more explanation please read Can I Fly My Drone Indoors? This will give you a comprehensive breakdown of the CASA laws and how school drone programs apply.
  • Unfortunately not. The Federal Government grant that you were successful for limits the face to face delivery component to being an excursion off site. This is a condition of the grant and not something we can change.
