She Maps Geospatial In Schools Awards

The She Maps Geospatial in Schools Awards recognise outstanding achievements and engaging, creative and innovative contributions of Australian students and teachers in geospatial learning and teaching, across three award categories:

  1. The She Maps Outstanding Geospatial Student Award
  2. The She Maps Emerging Geospatial Teacher Award, and
  3. The She Maps Innovative Geospatial Teacher Award.

Award nominations open on 1 June 2023 and close on 30 September 2023. Applicants can nominate themselves or be nominated with the endorsement of their school principal. Full details about the award categories, eligibility criteria, application guide and submission checklist can be found below.

The Geospatial in Schools Awards are endorsed and supported by the two leading geospatial industry bodies, The Surveyors’ Trust and the Geospatial Council of Australia (GCA). 

Award recipients win a visit to the annual geospatial conference Locate in Sydney in 2024, including travel and accommodation, a full-day access pass and an invitation to the exclusive industry gala dinner. 

GCA will host award recipients for a tour of the exhibition during the day, providing opportunity to make valuable industry connections, see the latest geospatial technologies and learn about advancements and innovations in geospatial sciences. Each Teacher Award recipient also receives a She Maps individual teacher membership for 1 year.

Award Categories & Eligibility Criteria

She Maps Outstanding Geospatial Student Award

The purpose of the She Maps Outstanding Geospatial Student Award is to:

  • Recognise the high achievement of students in geospatial learning
  • Highlight students making a contribution to geospatial learning beyond the classroom
  • Profile students active within geospatial learning and making active connections with the geospatial industry

To be eligible to receive the She Maps Outstanding Geospatial Student Award, you must:

  • Be enrolled in an Australian school in Years 5 to 11.
  • have attained an A standard of achievement or equivalent in at least 1 state Curriculum and Assessment Authority subject namely HASS for F-6, Geography Yr 7 – 11, Earth and Environmental Science Yr 11 or Digital Technologies with a geospatial emphasis. Other subjects may be considered upon a case by case basis.

Applicants can nominate themselves or be nominated with endorsement by their school Principal.

If the applicant is nominated by another person, the applicant must:

  •       agree to the nomination; and
  •       provide the nominator with the necessary information so they can address all selection criteria.




Once you have determined that you are eligible to apply for the award, you will then need to:

  • write a statement of no more than 500 words in support of your application that responds to the selection criteria outlined below;
  • ensure you have parental consent and a parent or guardian signs your application form;
  • have the Principal’s verification of results and enrolment completed by your school principal to verify your results and enrolment;
  • have the details of two referees who agree to endorse your application. The referees may be asked to provide more information about aspects of your written statement

 

Written statement

Your written statement provides you with an opportunity to tell us about yourself, your achievements and interests in geospatial learning, and why you should receive a She Maps Outstanding Geospatial Student Award.

Your statement should be no more than 500 words and should clearly respond to the selection criteria outlined below. A selection panel will use these criteria to assess your application. Please note the selection panel will not assess statements beyond 500 words. 

When writing your response, make sure you are succinct and give examples of your achievements and experiences in geospatial learning.

The applicant demonstrates a commitment to deep geospatial learning that goes beyond school curriculum requirements.

This criterion is demonstrated through evidence of:

  • a commitment to participating in school and wider community geospatial events and activities (including those online), reflecting a strong passion for geospatial learning;
  • involvement in geospatial extracurricular activities (forums, events, activities, clubs) as a participant, leader or invited guest;
  • a depth of learning undertaken in one or more geospatial learning fields (examples could include research undertaken, work experience completed, competition participation and achievement, forum participation, ambassador roles for geospatial events and volunteer work, club involvement); and
  • excellence in geospatial learning (examples could include outstanding achievement in geospatial learning, recognition of scientific work by school partner organisations and industry connections, selection to participate in events and forums, awards for excellence in geospatial subject related learning)

Before submitting your application, please ensure that you have:

  • read carefully through the application guide;
  • checked that you meet the eligibility requirements for the award;
  • written a statement of no more than 500 words that clearly responds to the award selection criteria;
  • provided details of two referees
  • completed the project consent form; and
  • provided your Principal’s verification of results and enrolment form.

She Maps Emerging Geospatial Teacher Award

The purpose of the She Maps Emerging Geospatial Teacher Award is to:

  • Recognise the achievement of emerging teachers in geospatial teaching and learning
  • Highlight emerging teachers making a contribution to geospatial teaching and learning beyond the classroom
  • Profile emerging teachers active within geospatial teaching and learning and making active connections with the geospatial industry

To be eligible to receive the She Maps Emerging Geospatial Teacher Award, you must:

  • Be a registered teacher in an Australian school teaching students in any Year from 5 to 11.
  • have taught at least 2 state Curriculum and Assessment Authority subjects namely HASS for F-6, Geography Yr 7 – 11, Earth and Environmental Science Yr 11 or Digital Technologies with a geospatial emphasis. Other subjects may be considered upon a case by case basis.

  • Highlight innovative teachers making a contribution to geospatial teaching and learning beyond the classroom
  • Profile innovative teachers active within geospatial teaching and learning and making active connections with the geospatial industry

To be eligible to receive the She Maps Innovative Geospatial Teacher Award, you must:

  • Be a registered teacher in an Australian school teaching students in any Year from 5 to 11.

  • a commitment to participating in new and innovative school and wider community geospatial events and activities (including those online), reflecting a strong passion for geospatial learning;
  • a commitment to sharing innovative approaches, units of work and connections with evidence of this within the school environment and/or wider network of schools
  • involvement in innovative geospatial extracurricular activities (forums, events, activities, clubs) as an initiator, leader or invited expert guest;
  • a depth of teaching and learning undertaken in one or more geospatial learning fields (examples could include research undertaken, field experience completed, competition participation and achievement, forum participation and leadership, ambassador roles for geospatial events and volunteer work, extracurricular club involvement and oversight); and
  • innovative excellence in geospatial teaching and learning (examples could include outstanding achievement of students in geospatial teaching and learning, recognition of scientific work by school partner organisations and industry connections, selection to participate and present at events and forums, awards for excellence in geospatial subject related teaching and learning)
