Recognising Geospatial Learning and Teaching Excellence

The She Maps Geospatial in Schools Awards recognise outstanding achievements of Australian students and teachers in geospatial learning and teaching. We want to shine a light on those individuals that are considered a driving force in the transfer of geospatial knowledge through engaging, creative and innovative contributions, and on those individuals that excel in geospatial learning through passion, curiosity, and leadership. The She Maps Geospatial in Schools Awards cover three categories:

Outstanding Geospatial Student Award

Recognising high achievements of students in geospatial learning in and beyond the classroom.

Eligibility Criteria

Enrolment in an Australian school in Years 5 to 12.
Have attained a B or above of achievement or equivalent in at least one (1) state Curriculum and Assessment Authority subject namely HASS for F-6, Geography Yr 7 – 12, Earth and Environmental Science Yr 12 or Digital Technologies with a geospatial emphasis. Other subjects may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Emerging Geospatial Teacher Award

Recognising the achievement of emerging teachers in geospatial teaching in and beyond the classroom.

Eligibility Criteria

Be a registered teacher in an Australian school teaching students in any year from 5 to 12
Have 1-3 years of experience teaching geospatial content
Have taught at least 2 state Curriculum and Assessment Authority subjects namely HASS for F-6, Geography Yr 7 – 12, Earth and Environmental Science Yr 12 or Digital Technologies with a geospatial emphasis. Other subjects may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Innovative Geospatial
Teacher Award

Recognising the achievement of innovative teachers in geospatial teaching in and beyond the classroom.

Eligibility Criteria

Be a registered teacher in an Australian school teaching students in any year from 5 to 12
Have at least 3 years of experience teaching geospatial content
Have taught at least 2 state Curriculum and Assessment Authority subjects namely HASS for F-6, Geography Yr 7 – 12, Earth and Environmental Science Yr 12 or Digital Technologies with a geospatial emphasis. Other subjects may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Industry Recognition

The Geospatial in Schools Awards are endorsed and supported by the two leading geospatial industry bodies, The Surveyors’ Trust and the Geospatial Council of Australia (GCA).

Award recipients win a visit to the annual geospatial conference Locate in 2026, a travel and accommodation subsidy, a day access pass and an invitation to the exclusive Excellence Awards Gala Dinner. The student award recipient will also receive a conference ticket and travel subsidy for an adult chaperone.

GCA will host award recipients for a tour of the exhibition during the day, providing opportunity to make valuable industry connections, see the latest geospatial technologies and learn about advancements and innovations in geospatial sciences. Each Teacher Award recipient also receives a She Maps individual teacher membership for 1 year.
